According to IDC, Apple shipped more smartphones than any other manufacturer in Q2, stealing the bragging rights of struggling Nokia. With 20.3 million units shipped, Apple failed to NAB 19.1% market share, representing a year-over-year growth of 141.7 per cent. With RIM and HTC, bringing up the rear behind, followed by Samsung and Nokia.
It is worth noting that HTC posted record numbers this quarter with 166% YOY growth required 11.7% market share, from 8.9% last quarter. HTC Evo 3D sensations and very little to do with that, along with the growing popularity of the HTC in China. Even though the company is in the fifth, there are still a large part of the RIM and Nokia. But not only that, HTC, Samsung took a big bite, too.
In fact, Samsung has been an amazing year, seeing year-over-year growth of 380.6 per cent. Much of this success can be attributed to the Samsung Galaxy S II, which sold 3 million units in its first 55 days on the market. If they can maintain anything like that rise a bit longer, they will leapfrog Apple with ease.
Now for the bad news. RIM shipped just over one million more smartphones this quarter than in the same quarter of 2010 — which will be a respectable bump if the Smartphone market has not seen much more growth, hitting 106.5 million of goods overall this quarter. So while RIM ship more phones, they actually lost a lot of market share.
Now for the really bad news. Nokia, as expected, performed worse this quarter, compared with last year's sold and market share. After the 30% reduction in the unit, Nokia now controls only 15.7% of the market. Obviously the transition from MeeGo to Windows 7 phone has quite a lot to do with this. While MeeGo dies, clients of choice for brand new phones instead of waiting for Windows-powered Nokia phone. Worse still, waiting for not ending anytime soon, as the United States not everywhere on the Nokia list of countries to get the first Windows-powered mobile phone.
Apple and Android powered Nokia and RIM in the lunch did not exactly breaking news, but seeing the real figures are always interesting. According to the latest numbers from comScore, Android ranked 40 per cent market share in June. It just so happens that the producers seeing greatest growth — HTC and Samsung — also occur predominantly run Android. Only that if Android can continue to grow at a rapid pace, Samsung and HTC will follow suit.
